About Artist

Myriam Tangi

When I started my photographic essay « Mehitza. Seen by women » (finalist SIPA 2017) (the separation between men and women in the synagogue - exhibited at the MAHJ Paris in 2015, (published in 2016 awarded IPA 2017), I was both conscious and enthusiastic to realize that this work could exclusively be done by a woman photographer. The aesthetic problematic being : how to photograph distance and separation ? (as a vision and not as documentary). In my photographs I choose mainly thematics as close as possible to different aspects of my identity : « The last Jews of Yemen » (1983/1984/1986 – awarded at IPA 2014) – « Me. Mona Lisa » (2007/2008/200) - « Migrants/Refugees » (2016 – awarded at SIPA and IPA 2017) - « Dog’s Level » (2017) - « Soweto » (2017, awarded at IPA, PX3, 2018 and Tokyo 2017) – « Urban Intimacy at Paris Plage » (2011 – awarded at IPA 2017) All series in black and white films. These series are black and white film. Since few years I integrated digital, first with my cellphone, and now with a camera, questionning my way of making photos, the color dimension (confronted with painting), considering new relations with the subject. « Shapshot» (2017) explores intrusiveness and intimacy : an experimental series as I photographed with my interlocutor computer or cellphone, through Skype. As a painter (Diploma in Drawing at Ecole des Beaux Arts Paris, 1979) : exhibitions in many countries (Paris 1983, 1986, 2006, 2009, Canada 1984, Italy 1992, 1994, 1996, Belgium 2002 - and awards (1984, 1988, 1989, 1994, 1996). The general title of my paintings : « From body to sign ». I published 3 books of poetry in 1996 (awarded by Académie française in 1997), 1998 and 2010. I lead writing workshops since 2001. In 2022, as director : « Tu sais quel jour on est aujourd’hui ? » 2022 (co-directing) first documentary film. - Four sisters hidden in Brittany while their parents are deported to Auschwitz. The mother did not return. 87 awards in many countries (including all the countries of the Arabian Peninsula) and 14 selections.
