During the 2021 Olympics, Goro Kotani quietly passed away in Tokyo. His uncooled room became unbearably hot. The tenement for wartime Korean laborers in Edagawa, Goro lived on a a small pension. From 2014, I photographed his decline, capturing a story of Japan’s poverty, loneliness, and history.

Makoto Kawakami
Makoto Kawakami is a Documentary Photographer, based in The Netherlands. He studied for a BA in International Relations at University in Japan. After graduate, He had been to Asian countries. 2009, He had started to work at Family Photo Studio in Japan and also coverage for a Landmine Victims and HIV Orphans in Cambodia. He worked for various Japanese Magazines and Newspaper like DAYS JAPAN, Nikkei Newspaper, Nikkei Business Online, Nikkei MJ, Journalism (Asahi Newspaper), Asahi camera. He cover wide range of assignments from social issues, sports, food, news for international publications and NGOs.
