About Artist

Arnold Mariashin

BIO Arnold Mariashin (b. 1970, Leningrad, now St. Petersburg) is a photographer whose work bridges photography, painterly intervention, and digital processes. He studied film directing and photography at the Leningrad State University of Culture and Arts and is known for using handmade cameras and darkroom-based printing methods. Mariashin has exhibited at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, including the First and Second Photography Biennale, and was included in Magic of the Object at the Leopold Museum in Vienna. After being compelled to leave Russia in 2022, he has continued to develop his practice internationally. His work is listed in the Artnet artist database, where auction results are tracked, and has appeared on Artnet Auctions. His photographs are held in the collection of the Russian Museum and in private collections worldwide. STATEMENT My work is rooted in the belief that an image should be self-sufficient. It should not depend on narrative, symbolism, or explanation. I am interested in images that exist entirely in their own visual presence through light and shadow, stillness, tension, and form. I often begin with ordinary subjects, but my aim is not to describe them or assign them meaning. I want the image to resist interpretation and hold the viewer through pure visual force. Only an image freed from story can remain open to endless looking. My goal is to create that kind of magnetism: a work that does not tell, explain, or illustrate, but keeps the eye fixed on it, as if it cannot be exhausted.
