About Artist
Shannon Dykstra
Wife and mom to grown and flown twins. I live in the PNW and spend my time doing photography work for the barn registry and freelance landscape work around the state. I got my start in laboratory medicine working forensic toxicology and trauma medicine but wanted something more family friendly while raising children. Dabbling in photography while living abroad in New Zealand piqued my interest in the craft and when I returned stateside, I pursued it fully. I began with portraiture and sports photography but found my love of history and architecture pulling me to the abandoned towns and homesteads of eastern Washington for photographic opportunities. When the need arose for photographers to join the barn registry to document historic barns along their journey of restoration, I jumped at the opportunity and have never looked back. While I still work for the registry, I also find time to journey around the state to the small, forgotten places tucked between big cities or hidden in the folds of a river canyon and spend time looking at it through my lens, finding the images that make that place unique. Photography has allowed me to see the world on a different plane and use imagery to educate and convey a story in my work. It is my joy and passion.
