Into the Depths
A diver descends along the legs of a pier towards the bottom of the ocean. Their expelled breath rises like pearls spilling from a broken strand, reaching the surface they have left to seek life and freedom found only by bravely descending into the depths below.
About Artist
Hannah Sotak
I have had an amazing life. I have traveled to different corners of the world. I have met and shared love and life with incredible humans from every walk of life who have each taught me something only they could. I have worked many different jobs, I have endured to earn several academic degrees, and I have pursued careers in both science and theology. In every part of my life and through out every endeavor and adventure, practicing photography for the benefit of my job and my spirit has helped me to understand and participate more intentionally with the world. It has also helped me keep a diary of sorts, from my first images taken with a used AE-1 and hand cut rolls of film in high school to the mirrorless cameras I am grateful to have access to now. (I still shoot with that old AE-1 to keep my skills sharp and basque in the solemnity of each shutter click. If you know, you know.) Nature and wildlife are my favorite subjects, both above and below the surface of the ocean. I don’t often photograph people unless they are engaging with nature in healthy and respectful ways. I have documented the destruction human beings have levied on the world as well as the beauty and healing humans are capable of when they reframe nature as ‘kin and gift’ rather than potential commodity and resource to exploit. I have recently been diagnosed with a life-limiting disease that has begun to negatively impact my vision, among other challenges. I don’t want to spend any time feeling sorry for myself or looking for escape routes out of the inevitable conclusion. Instead, I hope to use what I have and who I am to tell the stories of earth, both beautiful and tragic, hopeful and messy, good and worth saving, through my lens as long as it is possible. Photography tells a story I cannot write and provides me with understanding I cannot read or experience any other way. While many of the pictures I take serve as a diary of my life for myself and my loved ones, it’s time to share some of these experiences and images with the world. My greatest hope by doing this is to inspire at least one more person to see the world around them with greater discernment, intention, hope, and gentleness.
