200 Passengers Behind
Climbing above the clouds. Hear the plane. The whistling that wants to stop us — and yet we hum our song. Feel the body. The power of trust. The tireless fight. The oil. The fire. The strive for almost one Mach. The mass of steel and the freezing air. The warmer sun rays at the end. That’s us.
About Artist
Dan Materna
I am a film lens designer by profession and a filmmaker at heart. Since childhood, I have been obsessed with imagery and the visuality of all forms. I am fascinated by the drama created by light. I was born in the Czech Republic, and after high school, I worked as a camera technician for Panavision at Barrandov Studios. A year later, I moved to Munich for an internship at ARRI Rental, where I progressed from general intern to lens technician and ultimately to opto-mechanical lens designer. For several years now, I have been working freelance from my dual basement in the UK. I stand behind the design of the DNA LF, HEROES lenses, and special series for the ARRIFLEX 765. I also designed a lens housing for Daniel Kanes, CEO of Atlas Lens Co. My current goal is to become a digital content producer in London’s theatre scene, utilizing lenses I have designed and bridging the worlds of film and theatre. I love film material, and all my photos are captured exclusively on it. The thrilling moment of exposure and the slight fear of not getting the desired result at the end are irreplaceable by digital. When you look at a film strip or sheet, every single frame is proof of a specific moment. The frame is real, right in front of your eyes. Not a copy, not a clone of an electrical signal, but an authentic, preserved reaction in the emulsion from the unique moment you pulled the trigger.
