Faith, Flares, and Fortune
A costumed deity pushes through a wall of smoke during a Youshen (游神) parade in Fujian, China. This “wandering gods” ritual sends deities through the streets to bless villages and dispel evil. Villagers ignite flares just inches from the painted face, believing the sparks drive away misfortune.
