Q:

What part of the process of judging are you most looking forward to?

A:

Seeing new work. I’m always interested in reviewing submissions; seeing how others view the world.

Q:

What is your favorite part of your job?

A:

Constantly learning from creative people—authors, designers, fellow editors at Rizzoli. It’s a job in which you have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of subjects—wherever your passions lie—and collaborate with some of the world’s leading artists. For instance, I was very fortunate to spend considerable time with Azzedine Alaïa and observe his process and listen to his story. Translating the spirit of the author or subject matter into the design of a book by determining the most appropriate format, paper, typography, and layout is, well, exhilarating and extremely rewarding especially when you have an artifact that you can hold, share with others, and always come back to after the work is done.

Q:

If you could own the work of one artist, photographer or otherwise, and regardless if it is in a museum or collection, what work or artist would it be?

A:

Marc Chagall’s The Birthday. I grew up with a poster of the painting on my bedroom wall alongside the poem “If—” by Rudyard Kipling.

Q:

Who are three of your favorite photographers (working today or otherwise)?

A:

I’ve long been a fan of Martin Parr and William Eggleston. I’m definitely drawn to the storytelling and extraordinary attention to detail in Gregory Crewdson’s work. I enjoy getting lost in an Andreas Gursky. There are however three photographers I’d call my favorite: Clement Pascal, Simon Procter, and Bill Eppridge. Clement is a close friend and one of the loveliest people you could hope to meet. His affability helps his subjects feel at ease so there’s an intimacy in his portraits and it doesn’t hurt that he finds beauty everywhere. I worked with Simon Procter on Lagerfeld: The Chanel Shows and we’ve become good friends as well. He’ll create beauty, dreaming up worlds in photographs, moving image, and sculpture too. And Bill Eppridge was a photographer through and through, a photojournalist who always had a couple of cameras on him, always ready to shoot. It was a privilege to work with Bill and hear him talk about his many assignments for Life in the 1960s and his fondness for the glass in a Leica lens.

Q:

What is your dream book project (regardless of limitations)?

A:

Conversations between Tina Fey, Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David, Chris Rock, Stephen Fry, Steve Coogan, Amy Poehler, David Mitchell, Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, and Kristen Wiig illustrated by Ronald Searle and documented by Mary McCartney—another of my favorite photographers.

Q:

Do you have any favorite photo books?

A:

Unreservedly, and without any hesitation or false modesty, “This Is Cricket” by yours truly. Whether you’re a fan of the sport or thought it was a book about an insect or phone company I guarantee you’ll absolutely love every one of its 368-lavishly illustrated pages and wonder how you’ve managed to live all these years without it.
