Q:
How did you get into the art world?
A:
I fell in love with Art History in high school and majored in it in college. I always knew I did not want to teach or be a researcher, and I also had a passion for business. My first jobs were in galleries and the commercial side of the art world. I love getting to work directly with artists and placing their art with collectors. That is exciting to me.
Q:
What is your favorite part of your job?
A:
Curating spaces. It's great to work with collectors, designers, and hotels to place the right work of art in their projects. I love to see the finished install.
Q:
Who are three of your favorite photographers (working today or otherwise)?
A:
Anja Niemi, Tim Walker, Soo Burnell- I love artists with strong narratives.
Q:
What does ArtStar look for when working with artists?
A:
We look for images that grab you, strong color, high production quality, and a storyline and narrative to the work. It has to stand out instantly and create an emotional response with the viewer.
Q:
What are you looking forward to gaining from the experience of being a judge at reFocus?
A:
I love looking for new artists. We are constantly looking at new work, artists, fairs, and trends to see what's next in photography.
Q:
If you had any advice to give to photographers or artists out there, what would it be?
A:
Create a professional website and Instagram and keep it up to date. Post often and consistently. Follow artists you admire and hope they follow back. This creates a community with open dialogue and inspiration. Also, If possible, invest in your equipment. It makes a difference and our collectors like BIG photos.
Q:
Why did you want to participate as a judge at reFocus?
A:
To support working artists and see new work.
Q:
What part of the process of judging are you most looking forward to?
A:
I love seeing what is out there. That's the fun part of my job.
Q:
If you could own the work of one artist, photographer, or otherwise, and regardless if it is in a museum or collection, what work or artist would it be?
A:
Agh! Too hard to narrow it down. I want to own everything on ArtStar and so much more!
Q:
Do you have any favorite photo books?
A:
I do. I love Taschen's oversized, limited-edition books by Helmut Newton or David Hockney. They are beautifully made and the book is art itself.
