After graduating from the audio-visual department VAV at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (2010) my work has continued to circle around the sublime details in the mundane. I moved from video to the 2-dimensional world of the camera and the ambiguity that arises in the camera’s flattened representation of depth became an obsession of mine. Since then, the camera is my medium of choice; experimenting with its possibilities is at the core of my practice. From 2016 I work and live in my van, exploring urban surroundings and making site specific projects and exhibitions around Europe. Being nomadic keeps my eyes sharp and the focus on the core details in life.
Initially, I found my subjects in urban situations where play between light and shadow allowed for the possibility to transform everyday surroundings into abstract depictions. I examined perspective, depth and our visual perception. Since 2020, I have been exploring further and also using obsolete materials such as old slide projectors and leftover pieces of stained glass to create spatial situations.
Working with photography has given me a glimpse into the way our brains have an inevitable tendency to make sense of visual input, how we want to turn data into information and give meaning to what we see. The subjective role of the viewer and their interpretation come to light when we see the connection between the words ‘image’ and ‘imagination’. It is this realization that is the driving force behind my recent work.
