About Artist

Susan Brown

Susan (often known as Sue) is married with 2 adult Daughters and 4 Grandchildren. She moved from Milton Keynes City Life to Devon by the sea in 2005 which was life changing. Sue's Photography interest has spanned some forty plus years and has evolved from darkroom to digital and City to Coast. Her years in the darkroom were an important learning curve that has helped her to pre visualise in the digital age.

She gained 2 Fellowships of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), one was 'Visual Art' attained in 1991 with Darkroom works and one in 'Conceptual and Contemporary' attained in December 2019, done digitally. As she was on the RPS Distinctions panels as an Assessor she felt it important, for credibility, to get another Fellowship in a different genre.
Sue was on the RPS Distinctions Committee for several years and then became Chair of the Visual Art Genre and also sat on the Assessment Panel for the Landscape Genre. The RPS work was all as a volunteer. She is currently working (as a volunteer) Curating an exhibition  'Responding to Light' The diversity of modern photography - Photography exhibition at Make Southwest 2023. This is a very high end exhibition and will be accompanied by a series of events for the 6 weeks the exhibition will be on.  Sue is an Ambassador for PermaJet  (Makers of fine art printing papers), a Member (and on the selection committee) of 'MAKE Southwest' formerly known as 'Devon Guild of Craftsmen', a member of the Arena Group of Photographers, and part of the multi disciplinary Art Co operative, 'ARTSIX' in the South Hams in Devon.
She exhibits widely both in the UK and overseas. Exhibitions include Meniere Gallery and Gallery OXO both in London, and the Grant Bradley Gallery, Bristol. Sue also exhibits in various Hospitals as part of her interest in Arts in Health having been a Founder of the Company 'MK Arts for Health' in 1991, she managed to get the Company Charitable status and it is still successful to this day.
Her work has been published in many magazines and books,  'The Coast' - a book by 5 Arena members and a personal book on her  'Swimming with the Tide' Portfolio (an Arena Edition). She has also had a total of 6 images commended in Landscape Photographer of the Year Publications, 3 of which were exhibited in the National Theatre and one in The Sunday Times. Her most recent magazine article is in issue 278 of Black and White Photography. Sue had images accepted in the Royal Photographic Society's International Exhibition, for 3 consecutive years. The exhibition  tours the UK.   She has been interviewed by BBC Radio 4 for PM on Landscape Photography. Artists Statement

The eye does not always see things the way the camera does. I consider photography to be the art form of painting with available light. Changing intensity, colour and direction of light results in a change of mood of the same elements. I respond to the intrinsic power of light that continuously alters shape and form. Further changes can be made by exposure and shutter speed, tools uniquely available to the photographer. Some of my images encapsulate a moment in time. Others are ethereal, dreamlike and considered, so requiring planning and long time exposures to see beneath the 'seen' image.
