About Artist
Olaf Wipperfürth
Olaf Wipperfürth is a German photographer, film maker and artist, currently based in Paris. He came to France through the medium of philosophy, studying French philosophers and aesthetic theory for his art history thesis. However, art history was only the starting point for his artistic practice. Wipperfürth exclusively dedicated his life and passion to photography, art and film, projecting his theoretical and conceptual knowledge into his artistic universe that led him into eclectic storytelling. He continually seeks to capture time, the instant, "the story between the stories". His photographs and portraits are often like films that have been paused, frozen temporalities, saved moments. Greatly influenced by the idea of rhythm and movement in contemporary dance, art and German ‘80s subculture., his images are striking because of their cinematographic undercurrent. For over two decades Olaf Wipperfürth generated a captivating body of work. His exquisite lighting combined with his talent of capturing movement and emotion, made his cinematic photography unique and internationally renowned. Wipperfürth’s work has been published in leading magazines throughout the world such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Numéro, Rolling Stone, Harpers Bazaar and Interview Magazine. He collaborates with major brands like Dior, Lancôme, Chaumet, Cartier, Dries van Noten, Kenzo, Balmain and Nike. His fine art is shown in various exhibitions and book publications, and explores themes of absence, trace and ephemeral space, combining more recently the disciplines of photography and painting. Award winner at the PX3 | Paris 2018 – for his work on Sumo Wrestlers in Japan, as well as the TIFA | Tokyo International Foto Awards 2018, the Monochrome awards in 2018 and a COCA fine art finalist in 2020.
