About Artist
Tracy Brown
Tracy Brown is an Independent Curator, Artivist (Artist Activist) and Capacity Building Consultant who also teaches with the Center for Artistic Activism. Tracy is a seasoned visual artist and community worker who was born in San Francisco and received her MA in Arts Politics (Art and Public Policy) from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. She curated the Same Game Different Smokers exhibition which is an exploration of the aggressively pernicious relationship the tobacco industry has had with the Black Community over the last 400+ years. She was recognized by the Alameda County Department of Public Health for her outstanding contributions to the successful efforts to end the sale of menthol and all other flavored tobacco. Tracy founded the movement to stop US government agencies from using rubber Black men as shooting targets and created the breathtaking installation, Decommissioning Stage 4, as a creative response to the troubling issue. As a result of her work she was able to compel the world's largest purchasing body, the General Services Administration, to remove the rubber Black man from their catalog. Tracy has also spent more than a decade documenting the memorialization and funerary practices of people of the West African Diaspora and has taught and presented photography and visual culture in remote villages and urban centers. Today, Tracy serves as a Workshop Leader with the Center for Artistic Activism and enjoys success as an installation artist, speaker, guest lecturer, respected ritual photographer, Cultural Arts Capacity Building Consultant, panel moderator and so much more.
