Born 1958 in Belgium. Former journalist, teacher, software engineer.
Charles never stopped photography since 1975 when he bought a shared SLR with friends.
In 2000 he turned his back to what he did before (nature photography, family, journalism) to start artistic projects. Some times later he went back to school graduating for photography and a few years later drawing.
Charles works on long term projects - some of them running already for more than 15 years - mostly related to the human body, starting by taking picture of his mother's end of life: tattoos, scars, scarifications, ...
Charles also works for many years on borders in very special places: the vanished border in Berlin, the risk of getting a border again in Northern Ireland, the deadly European seas for migrants.
In 2020-2021, Charles built a body of work, with the help of male and female models, about the feelings of this category of people during the COVID times. When it was almost impossible to work for the models, capturing the moods, identifying the key issues they were facing, but also making sure the pictures would somewhat give an echo to the complexity and the ambiguity of this unique experience.
While showing some of his work on the web, Charles stresses the importance of the physical exhibition of pictures and the need to get the best match between the “gallery” and the image. For him, each exhibition is fully part of his art, and the photography needs to be the central part of an installation.
