Migrant places of joy and hope

Every Sunday, many residents of Zuidoost, a migrant neighbourhood on the edge of Amsterdam, go to one of the hundreds of churches in this area. There churchgoers profess their faith, find social contacts and hope for the future by an inspired pastor with singing, dancing and the chance of healing.

About Artist

Sandra Hazenberg

It has turned out to be inevitable: I am a photographer and I make images. For me photography is all about the art of storytelling and to make visible what I believe is worth seeing. With my pictures I try to document how people live in relation to the advancing time and how people and the environment struggle in the context of the rapidly changing society. Photography is my tool to express my commitment to society. I enjoy to be active in various fields of photography in order to fully develop myself as a photographer. Commercially I work for various corporates (portraits and events). My published books and exhibitions could be considered documentary photography. After working as a financial advisor I decided to follow my passion. After I graduated as a photographer at the Photo Academy in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (in 2012) I now present myself in the market as a fulltime, dedicated photographer. Exhibitions and publications 2022 - 26 januari t/m 8 maart 2022: Solo expositie ‘Amstelland in beweging’, Pakhuis de Zwijger, Amsterdam - Moscow International Foto Awards 2022, Silver Award Editorial Photo Essay - Solo exhibition ‘De Nieuwe Kern’, Gezellenhuis, Ouder-Amstel 2021 - Paris Photo, Awarded with Honourable Mention series ‘Traces of 50 years of Lada’ - Paris Photo, Awarded with Honourable Mention series ‘Motion in the land of Amstel’ - Solo exhibition ‘Brainchild’, World Trade Center, Amsterdam - Solo exhibition ‘Motion in the land of Amstel’, Aemstelwijck, Ouderkerk aan de Amstel - Solo exhibition ‘Works’, Fort Nigtevecht 2020 - Solo exhibition ‘Traces of 50 years of Lada’, World Trade Center, Amsterdam - Publication in national newspaper Volkskrant - Publication in national newspaper Parool - Solo exhibition ‘Ronde Hoep in beweging’, Gemeentehuis Ouder-Amstel 2018 - International Photography Awards (IPA) 2018, Honorable Mention 2017 - Photo book self-published ‘Kruitmakerye De Sollenburg’ 2016 - Photo book self-published ‘De Witte Dame’ - Solo exhibition ‘De Witte Dame’, Hotel Boutique DWD 2012 - Photo book self-published ‘Onbewogen bewogen’ - Group exhibition, Rauw, Loods 6, Amsterdam - Graduation Photo Academie Amsterdam And what is shown time and again: I try to make people and their environment visible. Because what is not exposed does not exist. When something is exposed, it becomes visible and not forgotten. I imagine the human being in his or her living environment in order to capture and examine transition and the advancing time and above all to record this before it disappears.
