About Artist

Jonathan Bourla

I am Jonathan Bourla, a fine art photographer residing in the coastal township of Snells Beach, New Zealand. Through my artistic journey, I have been greatly influenced by renowned American photographers such as Ansel Adams, John Sexton, and Howard Bond. In 1997, I had the incredible opportunity to attend a workshop conducted by Howard Bond, which left an indelible mark on me. Witnessing a master photographer at work and experiencing Howard's generosity and kindness was truly inspiring. My artistic path has been shaped by three significant books, each a gift that ignited my passion. The first was a breathtaking collection of Ansel Adams' landscapes, presented to me by my wife, Julie. This book compelled me to delve into the world of large format cameras and darkroom printing, determined to master the craft. Another gift, given by my brother Michael, showcased a diverse range of landscape photographs spanning the history of the medium. Lastly, a dear friend Matthew gifted me a book of photographs by Ellen Auerbach, where I was particularly drawn to the rendition of details and textures. It is this passion for intricacy and tactile qualities that fuels my own photography. Throughout my artistic career, I have embraced evolving techniques. I initially printed my negatives in the darkroom, honing my skills in the analogue realm. Eventually, I transitioned to digital processes, and found great enjoyment in performing dodging and burning of my images using a computer and pen tablet. Most recently, I have found immense freedom and excitement in utilizing two small digital cameras, enabling spontaneity and versatility in my work. My creative passion is ignited by the captivating textural beauty and qualities found in the Martins Bay landscape, the interiors of historic properties, with a particular focus on the remarkable Highwic House, together with a fascination for small scale detailed subjects that may be overlooked by others but which magnetically capture my attention. My chosen medium of black and white photography serves as a conduit to accentuate the contrast, shape, and textures inherent in these architectural elements. They possess a character and presence that enthrall me, and it is through my lens that I seek to convey their essence. Every photograph I create is a delicate balance between technical precision and artistic interpretation. My approach can best be described as a fusion of realism and artistic expression. While I remain faithful to the integrity of the subject matter, I also endeavour to infuse a sense of wonder and poetry into each image. Through careful selection of angles, textures, and perspectives, I invite viewers to embark on a visual journey of discovery, inviting them to share in my sense of wonder for the intricate details and rich textures that lie within these subjects.
