Patrice Bériault's animal photography weaves together his lifelong inherent understanding and experience of the animal world with 20+ years' expertise as an editorial and advertising portraitist, not to mention 10+ years as a filmmaker. Patrice is particularly interested in how we view the animal world and how we sculpt and shape its image. By placing the animal at the forefront of his work, Patrice focuses on the emotional bond between humans and animals. Then comes into play the notion of anthropomorphism. Photographing the animal at its height with a distinct stylization, Patrice forces the viewer to reconsider its relationship to the animal. Perhaps will he then succeed in better connecting the human to the animal.
Among the themes developed by Patrice, we find an ongoing series of equine portraits made in a studio environment. It is a rare approach that few photographers around the world develop.
We then discover Winterhorse, a project of equine portraits under winter storm conditions and Reptilis, a series on those small prehistoric animals that live among us. After that, Adoption House is a project initiated by Patrice for the Montreal SPCA and finally Kraniüm, a unique series created in collaboration with the Redpath Museum of Natural History, in Montreal.
Patrice combines his expertise as a commercial portraitist with a mastery of lighting techniques and an empathy for his subjects to his experience in the animal world, allowing him to interact with the animal world in a unique way.
In Patrice's view, this animal is the artwork within Patrice's art.
