Alessandra Calò is a self-taught artist and photographer, she has been experimenting from the beginning of her career the use of new languages that allow her to deepen her grasp of themes related to memory, identity, and to the language of the photography itself. Dominant practice in her work is the is the recovery and reinterpretation of archival materials: she doesn’t intend to implement a nostalgic evocation of the past but to propose a new vision of reality. She is passionate about ancient photographic printing techniques, and through this process she creates images, artist’s books and installations.
Her works are part of important collections and have been shown in prestigious international exhibitions and festivals - among others: “Fotografia Europea” Reggio Emilia; “Circulation(s) - Festival de la jeune photographie européenne,” Paris; “Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie,” Montreal; “Ras Al Khaimah Fine Arts Festival” United Arab Emirates, XIV Giornata del Contemporaneo.
In 2016, her project named Secret Garden won the Italian Prize for Contemporary Art, from which she subsequently drew her first book published by Danilo Montanari Editore (2018) - with a preface by Erik Kessels - special mention at the Marco Bastianelli Prize as the best photographic book published in Italy. Secret Garden becomes part of the Maramotti, Donata Pizzi, MoMA and Met Museum collections.
She lives and works in Reggio Emilia (Italy) and she is represented by Lab1930 Gallery (Milan)
