About Artist
Paul Bartlett
"I can draw a parallel between a jazz musician soloing and how I photograph. You're following a feeling and reacting to the moment. Through discipline and practice, you are able to completely get out of your own way." Paul Bartlett is a photographer and artist based in Adelaide, South Australia. With a documentary/reportage foundation, his raw, unguarded style focuses strongly on humanity and connection. "Whether I am connecting to who a person truly is through portraiture, observing a moment unfold, or disarming and relating to a stranger on the street, the camera is merely there to document the emotional connection that is transpiring." A self taught photographer Paul found the camera as a vital companion during the latter stages of his career as a musician, something that was documented in his first book ‘PROCESS’ released in 2021. This saw Paul being shortlisted for the Australian Photography Awards. "The more I photographed on the streets the more I was drawn to the people, I could actually see my photos getting closer and closer to the subjects I was shooting as I explored my style. I have a constant desire to connect to emotion and capture the aspects that make us all unique, yet one through our experiences." In 2022, Paul’s second self published book ‘MARKET’ was released as he won Third Place in the Documentary category of Australia’s Emerging Photographers. Paul continues to explore the depths of connection and emotion through photography with several large scale projects in the works for 2023 and beyond.
