Watery Being

I photographed those pictures at aquarium. It is said that they are plankton as a species, however at the same time, it is difficult to definite what kind of nature’s intentions or energy flow they live according to, in such flexible and soft form as like alien, beyond the human imagination.

About Artist

Eriko Kaniwa

Eriko Kaniwa is a Tokyo-based digital artist whose practice explores new visual possibilities of human and nature interconnection. After a career in TV program production and social venture innovation, Kaniwa founded Sensegraphia in 2014 to advocate a philosophy and creative practice that reconstructs the essential unity of people and nature through fine art. She also developed a workshop program applying photography and digital imagery to aesthetics education, presented at graduate schools, international companies, and conferences worldwide. Her earlier work focused on Japanese symbols of nature worship, photographing sacred sites such as torii gates in the sea, married rocks, and World Heritage landscapes. These works were published in the book JOKEI - Symbols of Nature Worship, Sacred Places in Japan, which went on to receive multiple international photography awards and recognition at global competitions. Kaniwa creates digital artworks today that fuse human and plant forms. She calls this theme “vegetal alienation.” Through a surreal specimen-like aesthetic, she visualizes boundary-crossing bodies where skin, organs, and plant structures intertwine. These works evoke both the fragility and resilience of life in the Anthropocene, inviting viewers to experience the human body as an ecological medium deeply entangled with the natural world. Pursuing this inquiry through both artistic exploration and scholarly research, she creates works that reconstruct and critically interrogate the evolving relationship between humans and nature. Her works have been exhibited at Art fairs as like Fotofever Paris or New York Art Fair and multiple art magazines.
