Urban Chacma Baboon Portrait, Simon’s Town
A chacma baboon photographed in Simon’s Town, South Africa, where wild animals regularly move through urban streets. His injured eye reflects the fragile boundary between humans and wildlife, shaped by daily coexistence, conflict, and adaptation on both sides
About Artist
Stanislav Stelmakhovich
Stanislav Stelmakhovich is a wildlife photographer and documentary filmmaker whose work focuses on the fragile boundary between humans and the natural world. Working primarily in remote and transitional environments, he documents wildlife behavior, ecological relationships, and moments of coexistence and conflict shaped by human presence. With a background in underwater cinematography, Stanislav has spent years filming and photographing marine megafauna, including whales, dolphins, sharks, and other ocean species. His approach is rooted in long-term observation, ethical field practice, and a preference for natural light and minimal interference. Many of his projects are created while freediving, allowing for a quieter, less intrusive interaction with wildlife. Beyond the ocean, his work increasingly explores animals living at the edge of human society — in coastal towns, urban fringes, and regions where wild ecosystems intersect with daily human life. These projects aim to move beyond traditional wildlife imagery, presenting animals not only as symbols of nature, but as individual beings adapting to rapidly changing environments. Stanislav’s visual language is shaped by documentary storytelling rather than spectacle. He prioritizes authenticity, behavioral accuracy, and emotional restraint, avoiding staged scenes or exaggerated manipulation. His photographs often emphasize texture, gaze, and presence, allowing the subject to confront the viewer directly. He has worked across multiple regions, including Southern Africa, the South Pacific, the Arctic, and the Antarctic, collaborating with scientists, conservationists, and expedition teams. His long-term projects address themes such as climate change, human–wildlife coexistence, and the resilience of natural systems under pressure. In addition to still photography, Stanislav develops documentary films intended for educational platforms, festivals, and scientific outreach. His work is guided by the belief that powerful visual storytelling can foster understanding without sensationalism, and awareness without simplification. Through his photography and films, Stanislav seeks to create an honest visual record of the world as it is — complex, interconnected, and increasingly shaped by human influence — while maintaining deep respect for the animals and environments he documents.
