Textures of Reflection
Textures of Reflection explores how water and light transform surfaces into shifting textures. Black-and-white images emphasize tone, shadow, and reflection, contrasting smooth human forms against animated walls and spheres, where light blurs the line between solid and fluid.
About Artist
Rick Feldman
Rick Feldman is a Southern California–based photographer working in fine art and portraiture. His work focuses on the interaction between the human form, architectural space, and light. He gravitates toward bold color and dynamic black-and-white imagery, using hard light, deep shadow, and reflection to explore texture, surface, and contrast rather than narrative. Rick’s interest in photography began early. He first used a camera at six or seven years old and received his first 35mm camera at age ten. While he pursued other careers and creative interests, photography remained a constant pull. He returned to the medium with greater focus after the loss of his son, Zac, in 2010. Photography, he says, “enables me to live in the moment and gives me a reprieve from grief.” He is the founder of Black Kat Studios, where his fine art nude and portrait work emphasizes form and presence over performance. His images prioritize restraint and intention, allowing light and environment to shape the composition without relying on overt direction or narrative cues. Rick favors hard, directional light and reflected illumination to carve shape and define surface. Strong highlights and deep shadows are not softened or corrected, but used deliberately to introduce tension, movement, and visual weight. Color is employed selectively, while black-and-white work reduces the image to structure, contrast, and tone. Alongside his fine art practice, Rick operates SoCal Home Photo, a commercial photography and media company. This technical background informs his personal work, bringing control and consistency without shifting its intent. Rick lives and works in Southern California and photographs throughout the Los Angeles area. His ongoing work continues to examine form, texture, color, and the effects of light on space and subject.
