About Artist
Josh Schachter
Photography has provided me with the language to be both an observer and agent of change. Visual stories allow me to examine questions and socio-ecological connections and incongruities, while striving to highlight people and perspectives that are often unheard and misunderstood. The people and landscapes I meet in documenting these stories force me to confront my own assumptions and inevitably transform my own understanding of the world. As a photographer, visual storyteller and community activist, I have worked for organizations throughout the U.S. to document issues from urban revitalization to food security. My images have been published internationally in books, magazines, newspapers, films and web sites, in venues ranging from the New York Times to the Navajo Times. In 1999, I earned a master's degree in environmental management at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, where I explored how youth could use photography to share their own lived experiences and perspectives. Since then I have collaborated for 25+ years on community-based storytelling and visual arts projects with youth, teachers, neighborhood groups, and nonprofit organizations in places ranging from New Delhi to Nigeria to the US-Mexico border.
