Torsten Scheel Born in Dresden, East Germany, 1970 Living & working in Singapore since 2010 Software Engineer by trade, working as manager in the IT industry Self-taught photographer, no formal artistic education Working entirely in digital color photography In my multi-year series "Vertical Island" I explore the public housing estates of Singapore, the dominant component of the built up landscape of the island nation. My primary objective is to reveal the visual qualities of the buildings and their surroundings to the viewer, condense them to almost abstract compositions removed from their ordinary function and submit a request for their closer observation. Exhibitions & Publishing In 2018, a selection of images from this series was published in the online art magazine Vertute. In 2019, the image "Toa Payoh, infinity #16" from this series was selected by "British Journal of Photography" for the group exhibition "Open Walls Arles", in Galerie Huit Arles, France and used in the magazine & in promotional posters for the next edition of "Open Walls Arles" in 2020. In 2021, the image "Toa Payoh, infinity #16" from this series won 2nd place in the Chromatic Photo Awards 2021, category Amateur, Architecture. In 2022, the series was selected for shortlist of the Siena Creative Awards. In 2023, the image "Toa Payoh, infinity #16" from this series was selected for the longlist of BBA One Shot Award.
