About Artist
Jarret Brown
I am an attorney and am having a late change of career. I was born in 1959 in South Africa. I trained as a solicitor/attorney in England. I started photography – always wildlife- in the underwater realm in the mid noughties. In the 15 odd years I was diving I managed over 1200 dives I spent a lot of time diving with and learning from renown underwater photographer Alex Mustard. The variety of creatures and the methods by which they adapted to the environment they were in, along with the colours made the underwater world a fascinating one. It is a very different environment to the land. In 2019 I was diagnosed with a rare blood condition which meant I was no longer able to dive. I decided that it was time to spend more time enjoying the world and my photography and so semi-retired. I still do a limited amount of professional work. As I could no longer dive I turned my attention to the animals on land photography. It requires different photographic techniques as generally you cannot not get as close to the creatures as you do underwater, and the nature of the light on land is very different. I do not know why, but I felt and still do have a natural affinity towards Africa and its wildlife. My style of photography is to shoot what is there and show both natures good side and its malevolent side. A lot of images “disneyfy” nature and do not show the violent and ugly side, as well as the problems wild animals have with the encroachment of people and the destruction of the wild habitat. I am an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society. It is important that people see what is happening to our wild animals and spaces so that something can be done whilst there is still something go protect.
