Prescribed Agnosia
By compressing natural landscapes into a flat, abstract topography, this photograph deactivates our cognitive shortcuts. Suspended prior to recognition—a state of prescribed agnosia—the eye must trace pure, raw texture, reclaiming active attention from the passive swipe of modern feeds.
About Artist
Jesse Kao
Jesse is a Taiwan-based photographer whose work investigates the friction between sensory perception, the natural world, and human structures. Drawing from a background in medicine, his work ranges from contemporary abstract landscapes that challenge cognitive processing to documentary essays exploring human resilience in compromised environments. He deliberately introduces visual friction in his images to push back against hyper-accelerated digital consumption, demanding a slower, more tactile gaze. By stripping away conventional naming shortcuts, his photographs expose the quiet, complex engineering of both our built environments and the natural world.
