Astral Plane
Created after my time in Berlin, this long exposure portrait explores fragmentation and transformation, suspended between presence and disappearance while blurring the line between physical identity and inner consciousness.
About Artist
Rafael Santana
I am a Phoenix-based photographer and visual storyteller exploring identity, transformation, vulnerability, and human connection through portraiture. My work blends cinematic imagery, fashion influences, and experimental techniques to create photographs that feel both emotionally intimate and visually surreal. Before photography became my full-time creative focus, I worked in the tech industry after earning a degree in Computer Science. That background continues to influence the way I approach image making, combining technical precision with emotional storytelling and conceptual experimentation. A large part of my work centers around transformation, both physical and psychological. Through portraiture, movement, long exposure, and atmospheric lighting, I explore themes of self perception, masculinity, memory, identity, and reinvention. Many of my subjects are collaborators I have photographed across multiple years, allowing me to document not only changes in appearance, but evolving emotional states and personal histories. Traveling through Berlin became a major turning point in my artistic perspective. The city’s nightlife, fashion, queerness, and culture of self expression inspired me to push my work into more experimental territory. Since then, I have developed ongoing projects using in camera effects, layered movement, and long exposure techniques to examine fragmentation, consciousness, and the multiplicity of self. My work has appeared in editorial publications including Ion Arizona Magazine, where I have photographed cover stories and creative editorials. Alongside fine art portraiture, I also work commercially through Rafalogie Studio, creating imagery for musicians, nightlife venues, brands, events, and personal campaigns. Whether creating commercial or personal work, my goal is to make images that feel emotionally honest while remaining visually striking. I am less interested in documenting people exactly as they appear, and more interested in capturing who they are becoming.
