"Mirror" is precisely the type of photograph that makes you spend a moment with it, questioning how much of the subject is fiction versus reality.

"Mirror"

...I simply adore creating pictures that resemble frames from movies that never existed.

Q:

Can you please tell us more about the circumstances behind the creation of your winning image, “Mirror”?

A:

I usually plan my photoshoots carefully. I plan the location, setup, context, timing, styling, posing, and everything else to the last detail. Basically, I see the image long before it is actually taken. Sometimes, though, these visions wait quite a bit before they have a chance to materialize. Similar was the case with "Mirror."

After long years of storing this idea in my notebook, finally, in 2019, while traveling through Thailand, I convinced my wife and my muse, Ana, to perform this stunt. We stayed in a hotel in the middle of a jungle in the Golden Triangle, near Chiang Mai, with a perfect infinity pool. It was late afternoon and I felt like it was a good moment to ask Ana - who by the way is my cheapest, yet most undisciplined model - to do this jump from the edge of the pool. I knew that when the sun is low, it would create a natural effect of the silhouette being reflected on water surface. After I had performed a safety test-jump myself, Ana replied mercifully: "OK, I'll do it, but only once!” Although I had tried for years, this time she agreed, maybe because it was my 40th birthday trip? I didn't have a professional camera with me, but I was determined to seize the moment. That's why I took this photo with... a borrowed iPhone and realized my vision in the form of two consecutive shots (Mirror #01 and Mirror #02), captured in one sequence, without any repetitions. Now "Mirror #02” is available as  limited edition fine art print at my gallery.

Q:

This image is very fashion-inspired. Can you tell us more about this influence in your work?

A:

I’m not inspired by fashion. I’m mostly inspired by locations. Places make me imagine the scenes that seem improbable but actually could happen. That is what I love about photography - that it allows you to create your own worlds and stories that otherwise wouldn’t take place. In other words, I simply adore creating pictures that resemble frames from movies that never existed.

Q:

What do you look for in the images you capture?

A:

I intend to constantly discover the mystery of femininity. And to rediscover it again and again. To tell stories and evoke emotions. To go way beyond superficial beauty. Because beauty itself is only the beginning. A story is something that adds true value and makes a difference because it triggers the viewer’s imagination. In my opinion, the ultimate goal is to create images that will inspire you to tell your own story. After all, my creative motto is: ”What you see is who you are”.

Q:

Who are some of your favorite artists that you look to for inspiration?

A:

I love Helmut Newton for his unprecedented approach, talent, courage, and sense of humor. I also adore Peter Lindbergh for his cinematic, poetic, and emotional photographs.

Q:

What are you photographing next?

A:

This October I'm doing a photo workshop in Athens, Greece. I’m sure it will be a great opportunity to shoot something special with the models and my team. Location scouting will surely determine the specific vision. In fact, a few last spots are still available in my second group. Do you want to join?

Q:

What is your dream photography subject?

A:

Any subject that keeps my heart on fire and results in photographs that make our world a more beautiful place.
