At first, the shape, contours, and colors in this image please the eye, begging the viewer to look closer. Upon further inspection, it becomes clear the form is a fisherman spreading his net out in azure waters, and the magic of Phuoc Hoai's winning image is in full force.

Q:
Tell us about creating this image. Where did you take it, when, and how much time did you spend creating it? Please feel free to add anything else you’d like to share here.
A:
It is fishermen's occupation [to fish] every morning in Phu Yen province, Vietnam. I spent about three days in Phu Yen province to take [a photo of] the moment the fishermen cast their nets, and I had to wake up early to observe their work. Anyway, depending from time to time and wind power, the shape of the net can alter in many ways.
Q:
A lot of your images are taken from an aerial point of view. Tell us why you prefer this perspective.
A:
I took a lot of photos from many different angles, as well as set footprints on new lands to discover. After a while, I realized those image angles above would bring to the moment people closely, familiar and generally but also fresher and unique.
Q:
Vietnam plays a huge role in your photos. What do you love about Vietnam as a subject?
A:
Vietnam country is one of the few places where I felt that there is the most harmonious combination of people and nature from unique, charming, and deeply imbued ethnic identities for the beautiful scenery and people of Vietnam. My hometown has given me the feeling that the more I go, the more interested and attracted by many different aspects. Every journey to explore my country always brings amazement and surprise.

What photographers do you admire?
A:
I'm always watching and observing other photographers whether amateur or professional. Everyone has interesting angles and deserves to learn.
Q:
What are you working on now?
A:
Currently, I am a banker, and photography is my passion.
