About Artist

Jean-Marc Grenier

Jean-Marc Grenier is a visual artist from Réunion Island, located in the Indian Ocean. He primarily focuses on documentary photography, which he enriches with various media and techniques depending on the nature of each project: video, sound recording, animation, and photomontage. Passionate about long-term travel, he embarks on journeys across his island, immersing himself in the heart of the population for extended periods to establish deep connections. His commitment extends to both documenting and creatively interpreting the diverse customs and traditions of Réunion Island. One notable project, "Patates à Durand," which began in 1993, documents the island's first fishing village. This project concluded in 2024 with the relocation of the last inhabitants and the demolition of the neighborhood's buildings. This five-act fresco, depicting the life and death of a tradition dating back to the time of the first Indian indentured laborers, exemplifies his work over time. His ongoing project, "RANT DANN RON, maloya la pa nou la fé," explores the cultural complexity of Maloya. Starting in 2018 and continuing through 2022 with the Heritage and Creation residency from the Department of Réunion, he deepened his exploration of the subject and continues his quest to understand the human condition. This journey began in 1997 with "Khronos Ikonos," a kinetic installation that questioned identity and the human condition through over 150 portraits of individuals from diverse origins, backgrounds, and ages. In the 2000s, he dedicated himself to preserving Reunionese heritage by spotlighting the photographic archives of two late photographers, André Blay (1914-1978) and Jean Legros (1920-1970). He produced exhibition prints, curated two exhibitions, developed a book, and created an award-winning interactive CD-ROM for the International Audiovisual Festival Museum and Heritage in São Paulo, 2002. In parallel, he collaborates with theater and dance companies and has completed numerous photographic reportages for the in-flight magazines of Air Madagascar and reunionese company Air Austral.
