About Artist

Carolien Van Schie

As a Fine Art photographer, I find inspiration in the timeless beauty of classical painting. My work focuses on still lifes and portraits, carefully composed and steeped in atmosphere, where light and color play a defining role. Light is at the heart of my images. I often use Rembrandt lighting — that soft yet dramatic glow that adds depth, emotion, and a sense of mystery. Combined with warm, natural tones, it creates a painterly quality that gives my photographs a timeless feel. I source the objects for my still lifes from flea markets and vintage shops, always searching for items with character and history — the more weathered and timeworn, the better. I often paint the backdrops myself, allowing me to craft the exact textures and tones I envision. Occasionally, I add a living animal to the scene, introducing a sense of movement and unpredictability that brings the still life to life. My portraits go beyond the traditional. Through the thoughtful use of light, clothing, and color, I transform a simple likeness into an image that evokes emotion — a quiet, visual poem with its own mood and soul. Each photograph is created with care and intention — a small work of art meant to be seen, felt, and remembered.
