Still Between Waves
A lone surfer leaves the water as the day fades at Maori Bay on Auckland's wild west coast. The sea softens into bands of muted colour — the quiet held between motion and stillness.

About Artist
Harald Hochmann
Harald Hochmann, PFIAP, is an Auckland-based, multi-award-winning photographer of Austrian origin. Though he works across landscape, seascape, architecture, street and people, his heart lies in abstraction and minimalism — the images that bring him the greatest joy. His work lives at the threshold where the recognizable gives way to structure, rhythm and color. He builds his abstractions in-camera rather than in post-production, using strictly optical and motion-based methods — from chromatic distortion to intentional camera movement — so that each frame remains a genuine photographic act rather than a digital construction. Out of this practice he has developed a signature visual language, most fully realized in his Chromatic Liquid Architecture series, in which the hard geometry of the built world dissolves into flowing bands of tone and hue. His photographs have been exhibited and awarded in FIAP-patronized salons across more than 30 countries, and in July 2026 that abstract portfolio earned him FIAP's PFIAP portfolio distinction. What drives him is less the subject than the act of seeing itself — the quiet geometry hidden within the everyday.
