About Artist
Peter Aitken
My serious involvement with photography began in the early 1980s. I became intensely involved with photography throughout this period, built a wet darkroom in a closet of my home, and divided my attention between large format nature/landscape work and 35mm urban explorations, all black and white. I attended the Ansel Adams workshop (on a scholarship) in one of the last years he was active. I had several one-person shows in North Carolina, including Two Views of the World at the Durham Arts Council. I exhibited in many juried shows and won awards in some. I also sold photographs through an agency in New York City. In the early 1990s, family and work commitments prevented me from devoting the time needed to do serious photography, so I put it on the back burner and became strictly a “family and vacations” photographer for quite a few years. In 2006 I found my interest in photography rekindled. I had been using digital techniques for snapshots and liked the freedom and creative potential of this new medium. The technology of digital cameras and printers had advanced rapidly and was finally to the point where the print quality was, for me, acceptable for high-quality fine art work. Since then, I have been strongly involved, working in both color and black and white, continuing to improve my craftsmanship and aesthetic vision. My photographs are in numerous private collections.
