Born in Manaus (Amazonas, Brazil), Raphael Alves studied Social Communication with a degree in Journalism at the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM), Photography at the State University of Londrina (UEL) and Visual Arts at the National Service for Commercial Learning (SENAC). He also obtained a Master of Arts in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from the London College of Communication / University of the Arts, in London (ENG).
In addition to collaborating with national and international agencies and media outlets in his region, he is a member of the Everyday Brasil project - (instagram.com/everydaybrasil). His original projects are dedicated to understanding the role and positioning of human beings in the space divided by nature and the urban.
Raphael Alves' work was awarded at the 31st edition of 'The Best of Journalism by the Society for News Design', 2010. He also won the Fiema (International Fair of Technology for the Environment) award for Environmental Journalism in 2010. In 2012, he received an honorable mention in the Leica Fotografe Cultural Contest. In 2013, he was selected for the 'Ibero-American Call for Photographic Projects Jumping Walls', organized by the Fundación Fondo Internacional de las Artes (FIArt) and the Secretariat of the General Ibero-American Secretariat (SEGIB). In 2014, Raphael Alves' essay “Limites Imprecisos” was awarded first place in the 'Leica X Photo Contest'. In 2015, he received the Fapeam Scientific Journalism award in the Photojournalism category. In 2017, he was awarded the 'Pictures of The Year Latin America' (POY Latam). In 2018, he received an honorable mention at the First International Photography Prize 'Visible Memory'. In 2020, he was awarded the BarTur Photo Award and the Itaú Cultural "Arte como Respiro" call for entries. In 2021, he was awarded first place in the "Pandemic in Ibero-America" category at Pictures of the Year Latin America (POY Latam). In the same year, he received an honorable mention at the Siena Photo Awards, won the XXVII Latin American Documentary Photography Contest and was awarded the Getty Images editorial grant. In 2022, his work was awarded the Pictures of the Year International. In the same year, his work received third place at the Conrado Wessel Foundation (FCW) Photography Award. In 2023, he was a winner of the BarTur Photo Award and received first place in the climate change category of The Nature Conservancy Contest. His work was also among the winners of the Sony World Photography Awards 2023.
