About Artist
Jason Malouin
In my client work, I bring people - playfully and unapologetically - face to face with their own significance, authority and authenticity. An effortless, embodied expression of who they are... Tangible, tactile and real. I want to find the thread that runs through humanity where people and pictures and identity and self realization come together. I feel like there’s far too much at stake to allow any of our efforts to be frivolous. There’s so much out there in the world (and within ourselves) to help catalyze us into better people. I want my images to be one of those catalysts.. I want the portrait to be the vehicle for the larger human experience. I’m very reluctant to try and “tell” someone something in a photograph. Mainly because we have so little control when it goes out into the world. I love that the images I make are only 50% finished when I put the camera down. There’s nothing more exciting than the other half of the creation process that happens when the images are perceived. That is collaboration at its finest. It’s co-creation. So I’m always shooting with that in mind. I understand that every image is processed through each person's individual hopes/ fears and experience/ biases. There’s no way to make something "universal" because we will all invariably interpret everything differently. So my approach is to frame an experience for the viewer. An experience in which they hopefully recognise a deeper or more fundamental truth within themselves. I think my worst fear is irrelevance. So I guess a big part of what I choose to create for people is significance. That’s the thing I crave the most. And maybe some deep part of me has chosen to bring significance into other people’s lives in an attempt to give my own life that significance I want so badly. By giving the thing you want to others, we invariably bring that same thing into our own lives…? That’s how it works, isn’t it?
