About Artist
Hayley Young
I have worked as a digital commercial and editorial photographer for nearly 20 years. This series is my first return to shooting film and printing in the darkroom since my early 20s. Stepping away from my phone, computer screens, and the comfort zone of digital processes has been incredibly cathartic and a welcomed creative exercise in what has been a challenging year professionally. This series is inspired by my experience moving through the world as a cis woman and my hyper-familiarity with the objectification of the female form. Using still-life to explore how we process beauty through iconography, gesture, found objects and fauna while challenging our perception of who we find beautiful; of what types of bodies we welcome into the spotlight. Because there is a power in this light. Power that can be as infuriating as it is intriguing. This work is my attempt to level set, to invite our appeal to expand beyond gender and objects in hopes that a new standard of beauty finds us.
