Berry van Galen is an image-maker whose work explores identity as something that is constantly in motion. Who are you, when do you begin, and where does the other person end? Themes such as solitude, vulnerability, identity and transformation form the core of her work.
Her images grow from her personal history, but move toward a universal story about the inner life of women.
She works with stilled portraits, stylised still lifes and layered compositions in which past and present slide over one another, the way memories blend with reality. The young women she portrays stand at a turning point in their lives, where identity is still being formed and there is room for doubt, growth and change. Through photocollage, double exposure and manual interventions with paint and other materials, she adds layers to the image. These interventions slow down the act of looking and create space for reflection, protection and mystery.
The work of Berry van Galen invites the viewer not only to observe, but to relate to questions about who they were, who they are and who they could become.
Not through answers, but by leaving space for recognition, memory and personal interpretation.
