My name is Peter Ingrasselino and I have been interested in photography for as long as I can remember.
Thru the years, many of my images have been published in The Sun Magazine, Off The Coast Magazine and The South Carolina Magazine to name a few. However, I recently
received the honor of receiving an Excellence Award in the Black and White Magazine 2025 Portfolio contest. The winning entries of my hummingbirds can be seen in the current August 2025 issue #173.
In the past I mainly concentrated in taking black and white still life, street and nature photography but now I totally specialize in taking photos of only hummingbirds.
These wonderful darting jewels can leave you literally breathless as they swoop, dive and feed on all the colorful plants as they show their glorious iridescent feathers sparking in the sunlight. It is certainly an amazing colorful show of such small birds only as big as your thumb.
It suddenly hit me that these small birds are not only seldom seen close up and in action, but rarely photographed in black and white! Why would they be? Just take a look at those magnificent iridescent colors that change to different shades of color depending on the lighting.
So I said to myself that I will not only begin the arduous task of trying to catch them in flight, but also to try and manage to get close enough to get photos of their eye lids and tiny claws! And let's not forget the fact that they are not only fast ( if you blink your eye, their gone! ) they only stay in one place for maybe 5 seconds if you are lucky.
I truly enjoy the challenge that this kind of photography has given me, but in the end
after taking thousands of photos, I only chose those that are truly show worthy.
And those that were chosen I transformed them into a dramatic, poignant and powerful world of the black and white medium thereby giving them a totally new look and insight.
