About Artist

Stavros Stamatiou

Since I was a student, I was involved with photography. I had even set up my own darkroom, a magical place which I sometimes miss. But it took me many years to understand what I really wanted to do with photography. It was a retrospective of the works of André Kertész at Thessaloniki Museum of Photography that revealed a new way of seeing to me. I started studying the works of the great masters, at the same time that I was taking pictures on an everyday basis, discovering the qualities of the light, experimenting and sharpening my visual perception. After many years I came to use my camera not as a photocopier but as a mirror, a tool that could give me the ability to speak about myself by using pieces of the world around me. But still I felt the need to deepen my understanding of the medium, so I attended photography lessons, seminars and workshops with various teachers. At the same time my work was exhibited in solo and in group exhibitions and published in journals - printed and online - and photography websites. My influences come from various fields of art. Not only from visual arts but music or poetry as well. Culture in general, experiences, memories, aesthetics, they all meddle and work silently in the background. It is a fascinating and revealing process that always finds ways to surprise me. "Street as a mirror" was my first book in collaboration with EYESHOT. It is a monograph of my work as it has evolved through the years. My second book, “A raven’s dream”, is an attempt to deal with the uncanny. It was published in 2025 in collaboration with Hercules Papaioannou and Giorgos Giatromanolakis (ZOETROPE).
