About Artist

John Petro

I am a serious amateur photographer who has been actively engaged in photography since my middle school years in the early 1960's. I was inspired by my family's subscription to Life magazine. This periodical introduced me to the work of Eisenstadt, Lange, Cartier-Bresson and others. I was spell-bound by their photographs and those in books such as "Family of Man" by Steichen and "The Americans" by Frank. But, beyond photography I had a love of science and eventually earned a PhD in mathematics. Retired, I photograph now more than ever with street, landscape and environmental portraits being my primary themes. I'm an introvert, but my camera gives me an excuse to engage with people. In 2016 I made a self-published coffee table photography book "Unnoticed No Longer". The title expresses what I love most about photography, compelling us to notice that which we often overlook. I have had solo photography exhibits at Art Space Herndon in Herndon VA, the Art Department Gallery at Howard County Community College and the Bernice Kish Gallery at Slayton House in Columbia MD. My work has appeared in juried shows in California, Oregon, Texas, South Carolina and throughout the MD-VA-DC region.
