The Stare

This image captures the rolling prairie grassland of the Maasai Mara under a dramatic Kenyan sky with a slash of light in the foreground, a curtain of rain in the middle distance and sunlit clouds in the background. As the rain moves across the landscape a small group of elands rest.

Honorable Mention

The weathered texture of the barn shingles and horse's coat have similar gradations of grey. The pattern on the horses's hood has a nice symmetry with the shingle pattern. The overall visual effect is an unexpectedly camouflaged horse.

Craig the largest big tusker is using his foot to scrape up a clump of  grass to eat. It's a slow and methodical process. This represents just one mouthful of the 170kg he has to eat each day. His ability to find enough food has been challenging during an ongoing drought in Amboselli.
